The Choctaw Prevention Program is a community based approach to Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs and Suicide Prevention. The programs provides proactive processes that empower individuals and systems to meet challenges of life events and transitions by creating and reinforcing conditions that promote healthy lifestyles and behavior through the use of evidence based practices, with culturally appropriate adaptations:


Projects: ATOD Prevention Suicide Prevention

Prevention Strategies:

Administrative: Recruits and supervises volunteers, identifies community members to serve on committees, and coalitions.

Information Dissemination: Establishes an information resource center to provide accurate and current information about alcohol, tobacco, drugs and suicide prevention. The program engages in public service announcement development, billboard designs and awareness flyers and media blasts.

Education: Utilize prevention curriculums that are endorsed as evidence based practices to educate children from Head Start through young adults as well as older adults. Alternative: Implements programs designed to provide growth experiences and offer exposure to healthy activities designed to deter use and destructive behaviors of violence, self- harm alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Problem Identification and Referral: Identify high-risk individuals who are exhibiting signs of dysfunctional behaviors and refer for appropriate services.

Community Based Programs: Organize, plan, enhance efficiency and effectiveness of service implementation, interagency collaboration, coalition building and networking.

Environmental: Through community participation establish or change written and unwritten community standards, codes and attitudes to influence the decrease of incidence and prevalence of suicidal behavior, alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use.

Choctaw Behavioral Health is a Comprehensive Primary Behavioral Health Center that provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary continuum of primary behavioral health care services as a part of the Choctaw Health Centers system of care. The services are patient-centered, comprehensive, individualized, and coordinated within and outside of the Health System. The center offers outpatient, and intensive outpatient services as well as ensures access to inpatient and other specialty referrals not provided on site. All services are provided by skilled, licensed/credentialed providers in the respective disciplines.
